Sex, Sexy and Sex Work and Academics- Part 1

December 14, 2013

This post is a prelude for tomorrows post. For the next few posts I’m going to be talking about sex work, academia and the law. Tonight I want to tantalize you all with some food for thought. This post was written by a sex worker- not myself obvious. I want you to read about her experience and think chew on it for a bit. Why did this happen? How could it have happened differently? How would this have been written if a reporter had been writing the story? A law enforcement officer? A conservative? A liberal? A feminist? An academic?

What are your thoughts? How is sex work portrayed in the mainstream world?

  1. Jesus Christ.

I’m all for prostitution being legalized. I wouldn’t be an employee, but I might be a customer.

That said, being an escort would be scary as shit! Going out to your place of business is way scarier than having the customer come to you. I’m glad to see she listed where she screwed up and what she did right–she’s very smart and analyzed the situation during and after well. She definitely did play up her strengths and obviously has a lot more interpersonal skills than I ever will. That’s why she is an escort. She was incredibly lucky, that time.

I guess I don’t know why it happened–the one thing that stuck with me is that she said her clients are usually screened, which is basically the most important thing ever. I definitely think that should be more required for customers of the sex industry.

    • Do you think regulating the industry to make client screening a requirement would make sex work safer?

Your response was exactly the type of discussion I was looking for. Watch for the second post in this series today!
